The pseudonym Backslash was given to him by his band counterpart and high school buddy from the group Spacebar which collaborated in the early 1990‟s. The name should ring a bell if you are a die-hard drum and bass and electronica fan during that era. Spacebar used to DJ and perform live electronica to the masses of clubbers during the renaissance of dance and electronica music here in Malaysia. This includes venues that used to exist more than a decade ago such as The Backroom KL, Movement, Zouk and even as far as Japan and Singapore.
When spoken to about music and how it‟s engineering his future, he says, “After 20 years of entertainment experience, broadcasting your own style of music based on your own influence is essential to get your message out to the public on what your true identity is as a DJ and performing artiste.
A qualified sound engineer from the School of Audio Engineering and self-taught disc jockey as he claims to be, was influenced by local DJ‟s such as Gabriel Chong, Sunanda @ DJ Face, DJ Acid, DJ Low, DJ Kut Masta K, The Groovedoctor, Nicky C and Jungle Jerry just to name a few.
These were pioneering DJ names in the clubbing circuit during the time of analog based playback media like vinyl. Learning the trade at these times wasn‟t that easy, he says, as it was sheer hard work learning to mix with turntables compared to software and hardware based platforms like “Serato” and “Traktor” these days. Not to mention having a big budget for investing in music software and on the latter, logging around at least ten to twenty kilograms of vinyl in a record bag or flight case to your event.
Throughout the years, DJ Backslash has contributed his talent and services to many venues across Malaysia since the early 90’s.

Awards and Achievements
Being actively involved in the scene, he was nominated for Best Hip Hop/RNB DJ category for CHOONS AWARDS 2010 and also Clubbing9ine.com’s Top DJ Awards 2010.
As a music producer and recording engineer, his music production has attracted the attention of local and independent labels such as Life Records, Take Off Records and Loops
Collective. His production has been seen in music stores around Malaysia as well as internationally, which in turn brought him to produce music along-side big international names like DJ SUV and Utah Jazz on the “Extended” Volume 2 drum and bass compilation CD in 2007 under the Loops Collective flag. The Choons Awards 2009 compilation CD which featured two of his tracks competed alongside a long list of Malaysian music producers.
Along the way, he has worked with many internationally renowned DJs such as the legendary Grandmaster Flash, Josh Wink, DJ Cash Money, Jon Carter, Roger Sanchez, Timo
Maas, Chris Fortier, Tim Coates, DJ Yoda, DJ Love Dinero and Asian Dub Foundation just to name a few.
As a pioneering mentor today, he has made it a point to pass down his knowledge of disc jockey skills to more than a handful of students which have achieved success in their disc jockey careers. “The key to knowing and spinning good music is to be influenced by all sorts of music and artistes from classical to jazz, rock to reggae, hip hop to electronica and the list goes on.
Don‟t limit one‟s self to just one due to the trend or peer pressure. Listen to all and appreciate all music be it local or foreign”, he concludes.
