Although Kughen’s instinctually keen ear for the musical soundscape was initially intrigued with the intense yet subtle genres of Indie Rock and Acid Jazz, it wasn’t until he realized the unlimitless potential in which he could explore the inextricable biology between sound and technology, that he found his passion in the electronic music scene. His natural instinct for sound, coupled with an intense self-imposed high standards of musical intergrity would later on become the distinctive cornerstones that would drive the success of Kughen’s career as a DJ.
Electronic music first caught Kughen’s attention in late 90’s with the sounds of artistes such as New Order and Bjork. He started honing his craft as a DJ in early 2000, just the way it should be, by peeling the potatoes, so to speak. Not one to take shortcuts, Kughen painstakingly began from Chapter 1, acquiring significant rudimentary skills on dj-ing principles from Playaz Universe Academy. Under the watchful and skillful eye of accomplished Techno DJ/Producer and founder of the school, Suresh Nelson, Kughen found his voyage into musicology fueled by the creative senses that inspired him as he moved through a collective of house music genres, from deep to dark , soul to funky.
In the process of his adventures he came across Techno, a secondary genre growth from house, that provided the gleeful playground of innovation, technicality and art that he was seeking. The art of combination and merging from harsh to aggressive to intelligent hypnotic beats whet his appetite for creativity and he wanted more.
A year past as his thriving interest with Techno developed before Kughen was ready to unleash the fruits of his labour unto the Malaysian clubbing republic. In 2002, Kughen made his first showcase at Kuala Lumpur’s infamous and thriving after hours spot, Barcode. His maturing from being a young apprentice to establishing himself as a genuine talent to be reckoned with. became swiftly apparent when he was offered a weekly residency a mere two months after his initial pro-bono jamming for the club.
From here on it was a dizzying ride, where Kughen put on many hats, juggling his task as a DJ while promoting club nights to greater success through various marketing initiatives, from a steady roster of rotating talent to relationship management with his fans, sometimes silently from the behind the decks, through the voice of his music.
Kughen’s career took another swift leap with the 2006 opening of the new club Maison at the trendy Asian Heritage Row, the successor to the mammothian12SI establishment. Now escalated to the ranks of spinning in a mainstream club, Kughen attacked the decks from the get go with the same relentless passion and enthusiasm he did as he began his voyage into music.
As Maison courted Kughen to become a regular staple of its’ club night menu, Kughen found himself thrown with another unique opportunity to expand his musical horizons. The house-oriented club favoured a strong musical procedure, which clearly matched the club and pushed Kughen to transition his sounds from techno into a broader base of house grinds.
The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the now, his continuing stint at Maison has seen Kughen hosting the lead set for the club’s important Friday nights, in addition to sharing the decks with the crème de la crème of KL’s DJ elite, from Joey G to Jungle Jerry, Gabriel and international acts such as Godwin[M.O.S Sg], Romy [Ina],John OO Fleming , Sandra Collins, Honey Dijon, Alex Morph and Daniel Bailey.
Today, Kughen is no longer the young Padawan waiting for initiation into the big leagues, instead he has matured into the role as one of KL’s leading figures as the voice of the next generation in the electronic dance music scene. With his new residency at Raw in the bag, you can trust this DJ to drive the scene for a long time to come.
