An hour-long pre-show will air LIVE on Monday, 26 August at 7am (TH/WIB) and 8am (SIN/HK/MAL/PH) outside of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and feature performances presented by State Farm® with the new faces of pop, Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande. Additionally, chart-topping female DJ/Producer duo and COVERGIRLS NERVO will spin from the red carpet throughout the broadcast as MTV News’ Sway Calloway, James Montgomery and Christina Garibaldi bring all of the action and interviews with music’s hottest stars to viewers at home. Plus, fans will be able to be part of the interview team by submitting video questions for their favorite artists using #AskVMA through Twitter, Vine and Instagram.
Singer-Songwriter and Producer, Bruno Mars, is riding high off of the success of his sold-out “Moonshine Jungle Tour” and multi-platinum album, Unorthodox Jukebox, which have generated the worldwide hit singles, “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man,” as well as his current smash, “Treasure.” Mars is nominated in four “Video Music Award” categories this year, including “Video of the Year,” “Best Pop Video,” and “Best Male Video” for “Locked Out of Heaven,” and “Best Choreography” for “Treasure”. His return to the VMA stage this year marks his third performance at the “MTV Video Music Awards” as he performs his upcoming single from Unorthodox Jukebox for the first time live on television.
Fresh off of their show-stopping performances at the 2013 “MTV Movie Awards” and 2013 “mtvU Woodie Awards,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis make their VMA debut this year where they will perform their anthem for marriage equality, “Same Love” from their GOLD certified debut album, The Heist. This marks the first time an artist has performed at all three of MTV’s major music events in a single calendar year. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis received six VMA nods (tying Justin Timberlake in total nominations) including “Video of the Year” for their smash-hit “Thrift Shop,” “Best Hip Hop Video,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Direction,” and “Best Editing” for “Can’t Hold Us” featuring Ray Dalton, while “Same Love” received a nod for “Best Video with a Social Message”. “I am so excited to be a part of this year’s VMAs. To be nominated for the first time this year was amazing enough, but to now actually be performing for the VMAs, it’s literally a dream come true,” said Austin Mahone.
“Having grown up watching the VMAs, it’s a surreal thrill to be performing on the stage. I can’t wait,” said Ariana Grande.
“We’ve watched the VMAs since we were kids and were absolutely honored when asked to play the pre-show this year. We will be flying from our summer residency in Ibiza directly to the VMAs and really can’t wait!” said NERVO.
VMA “Artist to Watch” nominee Mahone is set to serenade the streets of Brooklyn with his single “What About Love” from his upcoming debut album, set to release later this year. As part of the lead-up to the 2013 “MTV Video Music Awards,” Mahone will perform at a special pop-up concert on Saturday, 24 August during a week-long series of free VMA themed concerts happening throughout New York City and Brooklyn.
Platinum selling recording artist Ariana Grande, who also stars on Nickelodeon’s “Sam & Cat,” will rock the stage with her hit singles “The Way” and “Baby I” from her upcoming album “Yours Truly” in stores 3 September.
NERVO made a historic debut as the only females voted onto the coveted DJ Mag 2012 Top DJ’s Poll and recently celebrated their very first #1 on the Billboard Club Chart earlier this summer with their latest Astralwerks Records club banger “Hold On”. The duo are set for another smash hit with “Not Taking This No More,” their upcoming 23 September 23. Last November, sisters Liv and Mim added COVERGIRLS to their growing list of credentials which includes DJs, producers, hit songwriters, singers and all around superstars.
To build anticipation for the show, MTV launched a successful cross platform social campaign, #RoadToTheVMAs, which features the Moonman in a myriad of iconic locations throughout Brooklyn and NYC. Thus far, the campaign has garnered more nearly 100 million social media impressions to date including over half a million likes on Instagram, 48.5 million impressions on Twitter, nearly 40 million impressions on Facebook and over 1 million impressions on Tumblr.
