Ruums, Kuala Lumpur
Having years of experience in the F&B industry, Hew initially started off by studying hotel management in Switzerland. Upon returning to Malaysia, he delved into the running of prominent establishments, such as Planet Hollywood for over a year.
“In 2003, I was given an opportunity to work for Red Box Karaoke and managed new outlet openings in Sunway and Penang,” he shares, adding how exciting ventures in the form of flying in artistes the likes of Kelly Chen were carried out. His innate sense of F&B marketing caught the attention of Sebastian of Café Flam fame who subsequently got Hew to work on the restaurant’s opening.
“The challenge is there to hit the market and make more money,” Hew explains. Another pet project he worked on was Rush at Eastin Hotel. Giving him a free hand in handling the club, the owners took a good step in doing so by raising the reputation of a club “located nowhere into something,” he beams with pride. Ruums’ increase in public popularity is just a run of the pattern.
“To me, Ruums is a team effort,” Hew modestly enthuses, “It’s not a one-man show. We’ve got many departments – floor, bar, sound and lighting. We must have a high-caliber team in order to generate the right atmosphere.”
The atmosphere in Ruums is such that there are different areas to cater for the fickle wants and moods of patrons. Though having differently-themed zones are not at all rare in the clubs of today, it has an advantage in terms of quantity in space. All areas are spacious, dispelling thoughts of the establishment over-utilizing and cramping its customers.
Upstairs is another place altogether, with a third bar. An exotic theme, of velveteen star-shaped chairs next to elevated cubicles draped with rich gold curtains, encapsulate one side of the first floor. The cubicles are thoroughly cushioned, each with a dim red lamp hanging inside. The other side of the upper floor is covered floor-to-ceiling with lush drapes and a velvet banana cream sofa lines its entire length.
Having the liberty to decorate areas in accordance to preference allows Ruums to cater to all age groups. Most of its patrons are between the ages of 18 to 30 years old, though one cannot attest that there aren’t any older customers, some of which are tourists as well.
Every night, DJs Ken, Jerryca, Remy and Sas churn out a mixture in tune to the crowd’s attendance. Usually starting off with R&B to warm up the crowd, it flows to an hour or two of retro during Happy Hours before moving on to house, electro and trance later at night. Tuesdays are an exception, whereupon only R&B and hip hop is spun and there’s no cover charge applicable. If you think that’s a bargain, read further. Ladies get three free premium drinks and college students (with valid student ID) enjoy ‘one for one’ on beers, selected house pours and cocktails.
Should ladies come hither in a group of five on Wednesdays or Thursdays and they get a free bottle of Bacardi Limon and absolute free flow of premium cocktails. As if complimentary drinks aren’t enough, dare to dress sexy and strut it on the podium to bring home cash and prizes.
Providing more then enough ruum for everyone, look out for their new ventures in the months to come where plans of opening a new 7,000 square feet upper market club in KL Sentral complete with a 22-hour restaurant is sure to make some sit up.
