Selected the sexiest DJ in Asia of 2016, EDMDroid get the chance to have a 5 minutes quickie online interview with DJ Gloria Ansell hailing from Hong Kong. From a very young age, Gloria Ansell has always been involved in music. Her family of mixed heritage from Australia and Hong Kong, with an extensive musical background, taught her to play such instruments as guitar, piano and drums, which would eventually pave the way for her future career in DJing. Let see what Gloria have to say in this interview.
Hi Gloria, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. What are you up to at the moment?
Hi EDM Droid, it’s my pleasure. Thank you for having me. I’m currently returning back to China after a wild time in Nepal Djing at Karma Bar & Lounge.
How did you started as DJ & producer?
I originally started DJing as a hobby at various underground outdoor events I hosted around the city I live in, Shenzhen. And that’s how I gained experience DJing in front of crowds and slowly grew my network around the city. My partner was a Dj resident at Volar in HK and taught me the basic skills of DJing and he had professional equipment that I practised on for a year before trying to get gigs. Through my event company, my name started to become quite well known around the city and eventually, many nightclubs and bars started wanting to book me to Dj and host events at their venues. This eventually lead me to invest in Pepper Club which we opened two years ago and where I’m currently a Dj resident and has become one of the most respected clubs in the whole country.
Where are you currently based?
I’m currently based in SZ where I have a Friday residency at Pepper Club, Southern China’s hippest nightclub.
How do you feel like to be selected the Asia’s Sexiest DJ?
It’s definitely an honour but it also feels weird at the same time because I don’t feel worthy of this title. Obviously, I think there are much sexier female DJs out there than me. But maybe my style of sexy shows more through my attitude rather than appearance.
How long have you been involved in the DJ industry?
I’ve been djing now for around 6 years.
How would you describe your current style?
I play different genres for different occasions, but I think my style has always been house based electronic music, fusing a bit of the underground styles of tech, techno, and deep with vocal popular house tracks.
Is there anything you would like to shout out?
I would just like to say to those reading this that we only have one life so make each and every day count. Smile more, reach out to the people around you and make a difference in your part of the world, enjoy the simple things in life, give love and watch it come back to you. One of my favourite quotes is: “Dance like no one is watching, Love like you’ll never be hurt, Sing like no one is listening, and Live like its heaven on earth.”
